British & Irish Lions assistant coach Ian McGeechan is looking forward to working with the new faces in Sir Clive Woodward’s squad but reckons the experience of veterans such as Lawrence Dallaglio and Neil Back will be the crucial factor in New Zealand.

McGeechan, who will take charge of the midweek team in New Zealand, said: "There are a few new kids on the block in there, which is exciting. But importantly there are also guys who know how to win in a Lions jersey.

"They know the environment you need to create to win a Test series and will also be role models for the younger players. We talk about the Lions being unique, but they truly are.

"It’s so different to anything you’re involved in as a coach or a player. If you can understand that then you have the chance to be a success in New Zealand.

"We have a talented group of players but it’s the personality of the squad which is so important – that must come out to create a winning environment.

"If we do that we cam win the Test series. As Clive said, the Lions historically fail. It’s all about being able to gel together various players from different nations."
