Mark van Gisbergen could not beat Jonny Wilkinson’s goalkicking record but still emerged with a healthy 15-point haul as Wasps extended their unbeaten start to the season with a 34-20 win over Worcester.
A landmark went begging for the full-back after he levelled Wilkinson’s record of 28 consecutive successful shots at goal only to miss a straightforward penalty attempt in first-half injury time.
Wasps moved up to second in the table behind Leicester after withstanding pressure up front then taking their chances with tries from Raphael Ibanez, Tom Voyce, Joe Worsley and Tim Payne.
Wasps boss Ian McGeechan added to the clamour for the 28-year-old Van Gisbergen to be included in England coach Andy Robinson’s plans.
McGeechan said: "He’s ready for England – he plays very consistently at this level and when you look at a player like him it’s about the next challenge at the next level."
Worcester piled on the forward pressure with a first-half score from Pat Sanderson and a late breakaway effort by full-back Nicolas Le Roux, with Shane Drahm kicking two conversions and two penalties.
Leeds Tykes remain without a win after sliding to a 28-20 defeat against Leicester Tigers at Headingley.
The Tykes held the lead for much of the second half but fell behind to a Ross Broadfoot penalty in the 77th minute, and stand-in captain Louis Deacon secured the win with a try four minutes into injury time.
The win put the Tigers top of the table, and means the Tykes remain rooted to bottom.
"The guys who played had been doing their stuff for the second team and they deserved their shot. They did very, very well," said Tigers coach Pat Howard.
"I was very, very proud of the players, who deserve a lot of credit for the way they played. I thought it was an outstanding performance."
Bath recorded their first win of the season after an impressive second-half comeback against Newcastle. They triumphed 27-16 at Kingston Park to the relief of coach John Connolly.
"We needed it, there’s no doubt," he said.
"We feel a lot better about ourselves and it gives us confidence that the way we are training and what we are doing is right."
Olly Barkley had missed penalty opportunities which allowed the hosts to gain the initial advantage before Cory Harris was sin-binned just before the interval.
The visitors then scored four tries – through Matt Stevens, Martyn Wood, Zak Feaunati and James Scaysbrook – to kick-start their campaign and also claim a bonus point.
