Daniel Carter heads a list of 13 New Zealand internationals and 47 Super 14 players who have signed new long-term contracts with the New Zealand Rugby Union.
Carter, who has scored 315 points in 22 All Black Tests, including a record 33 in the second British & Irish Lions Test in July, has penned a deal committing himself to the Union until 2008.
The NZRU’s announcement means the bulk of their current squad are now in place to travel to the 2007 World Cup in France.
Other All Blacks signed include Nelson and Crusaders wing Rico Gear, Marty Holah, Doug Howlett, Campbell Johnstone, Byron Kelleher, Sione Lauaki, Ma’a Nonu, Anton Oliver, James Ryan, Kevin Senio, Ali Williams and Tony Woodcock.
NZRU deputy chief executive Steve Tew felt the Carter deal was a coup.
"Daniel has signed with the NZRU to 2008 which is fantastic for the All Blacks, New Zealand rugby and his fans," he told local newspaper The Press.
"He is an incredibly gifted young player and in just two seasons he has become a key member of the All Blacks."
The list of players signed for Super 14 in 2006 includes Troy Flavell, who joined Auckland this week, and Andrew Blowers.
The 30-year-old back-rower spent five years with
Northampton before moving to Japan and is yet to be allocated to a specific provincial union.
"It is very pleasing to see top-quality players choosing to come back and contribute to New Zealand rugby," added Tew.
"Their decision shows that New Zealand is still considered an attractive option by players and reflects well on what New Zealand and rugby in this country has to offer."
One Kiwi staying overseas is ex-international fly-half Tony Brown, who has joined South Africa’s Sharks Super 14 franchise.
The 30-year-old signed a six-month contract with the Durban-based team.
Otago veteran Brown left New Zealand for Japan in 2003, after playing in 18 Tests, the last coming in 2001.
He joins former Australia star David Campese, who will have an assistant coaching role with the Sharks and has already spent time with the team in their domestic Currie Cup venture.
Brown follows compatriot Keith Lowen, the ex-Waikato centre who has signed up with Central Cheetahs, the expansion franchise.
