Former Australia coach Eddie Jones is urging England to resist the temptation to turn to World Cup winner Sir Clive Woodward following their poor Six Nations campaign.
Woodward, who quit the sport following last summer’s British & Irish Lions tour to move into football with Southampton, is being linked with a return to Twickenham in a new director of rugby role.
But his great former rival believes rugby’s rulers should get behind current coach Andy Robinson in the run-up to the 2007 World Cup.
Jones, who was sacked by Australia after last year’s disappointing European tour and is now a consultant at Premiership side Saracens, said: "You always tend to go back to what’s made you successful in the past when you’re under pressure.
"But I’d be very surprised if Clive Woodward goes back to the job unless he’s given absolute power over everything.
"In international rugby, apart from New Zealand everyone else is close to the same mark. They’re all beating each other and no-one is consistently great.
"England have definitely struggled to put together a consistent game-plan but Andy Robinson’s a very good coach and I’m sure he can still put together a competitive side. One win in Australia on the summer tour and it’ll look a lot brighter."
However, Jones admitted he is surprised by the lack of creativity on show in English rugby.
He continued: "Obviously conditions in winter play a part in it but the ambition side is surprising.
"The Premiership is very tough physically, tactically and technically, but I’m surprised sides don’t play with a bit more ambition in attack."
