Springbok head coach Peter de Villiers has received the backing of the South African Rugby Union (SARU) following recent allegations regarding his personal life.
De Villiers, who took over from World Cup winning coach Jake White in January and is contracted to take charge of the Boks during next summer’s series against the Lions, had been criticised for remarks he made in the hours shortly after the publication of blackmail allegations.
The former South Africa U-21 coach stated that he was tempted to “give the job back to the whites”, something which he has today admitted he was wrong to say.
SARU president Oregan Hoskins accepted de Villiers’ apology and has agreed to support the first black coach of South Africa in the event of legal action against media organisations who have continued to repeat the allegations made against him.
