British & Irish Lion Paul O’Connell is just seven days removed from Ireland’s triumph in France but Munster head coach Rob Penney insists he’s ready to head straight back into the mix.
Last Saturday saw an emotional night in Paris as Brian O’Driscoll bowed out from the international stage in triumphant style following a nail-biting 22-20 win over Les Bleus.
For O’Connell however, the journey goes on for both club and country in what has been a remarkable season so far.
It started with a Lions series victory on his third time of asking, making his mark in the opening Test in Brisbane before a fractured arm cruelly put paid to the rest of his summer.
But the 34-year-old returned to action in fine fettle and as Munster approach this season’s run-in, Penney believes O’Connell is showing no signs of weariness.
“Paul wanted to be involved this weekend to keep building off the momentum of his successful campaign with the Irish team,” said Penney.
“It shows the calibre of the player – he came to watch the team train on Tuesday and he wants to contribute against Treviso and secure more game time ahead of a crucial period.”
