Golf days and mountain climbs: Charity partners enjoy busy October

The five charity partners of The British & Irish Lions have been keeping busy this past month raising money through a number of events.

Come rain, sleet, snow or hail, the Matt Hampson Foundation, Dallaglio Rugby Works, My Name’5 Doddie, Wooden Spoon and LooseHeadz have tirelessly worked in raising money in support of their targets.

Three-time British and Irish Lion Simon Shaw took on a golfing tour of The Renaissance Club helping to raise money for the My Name’5 Doddie foundation, where he was joined by two icons of Scottish rugby; Kenny Logan and one-time British and Irish Lion tourist Gregor Townsend.

Shaw appeared in Three Lions Tours and became the oldest ever Lions Test debutant in 2009 when the then 39-year-old was selected for the second Test in Pretoria, earning man of the match honours and a starting place in the historic third Test win.

Shaw was first called up to the Lions in 1997– also in South Africa – debuting against Eastern Province and making seven appearances in all that year before registering five matches during the 2005 Tour in New Zealand after missing out on the tour to Australia in 2001.

My Name’5 Doddie also announced the investment of £1.27 million in new projects to advance treatments for MND, to be supported through the foundation’s Advancing Treatment Awards.

Elsewhere, the Belfry Hotel and Resort saw an array of stars visit the site in support of the Matt Hampson Foundation in a Team Tins v Team Titch Golf Day.

Former Lion Geordan Murphy took part in an evening Q&A at the hotel alongside Mike Tindall and Leicester Tigers duo Freddie Steward and Dan Kelly.

Earlier in the day, former England cricketer James Taylor took home the trophy and Bayern Munich pair Thomas Muller and Eric Dier tried their hand at the site’s adaptive competition hole.

Meanwhile, Wooden Spoon have offered a chance at an evening with rugby royalty through a prize draw where two lucky winners get the rare chance to hear from World Cup winner and two-time Lion Jason Robinson.

Robinson made ten Lions appearances as a member of the 2001 and 2005 Tours of Australia and New Zealand, appearing in four Test matches.

An illustrious figure of British and Irish rugby, Robinson’s most iconic moment as a Tourist is undoubtedly his dazzling display and try against Australia in the First Test in Brisbane, famously leaving Wallaby Chris Latham in his wake.

LooseHeadz raised upwards of £15,000 in support of mental health thanks in part to the efforts of Greg Bateman and Exeter Chiefs legend Kai Horstmann, who not only scaled the 3 Peaks of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon but also cycled between them.

They are also hosting a pub quiz in November, with Adam Jones and Leigh Halfpenny among the Lions set to attend.

The St. Pierre Golf Club hosted the Dallaglio Dragons’ Cup in support of the Dallaglio Rugby Works, with former Lions Lawrence Dallaglio, Alex Cuthbert and Tom Shanklin all teeing off over the course of the day.
