Schalk Brits is looking forward to facing The British & Irish Lions even more than most after missing out on a similar chance in 2009.
The Saracens hooker had just agreed a move to London when The Lions toured his native South Africa four years ago, meaning he didn’t feature for either Western Province or the Springboks against Britain and Ireland’s elite.
He will finally put things right this Saturday, though, after being named in the Barbarians squad for the opening Tour fixture in Hong Kong.
And he could come up against a trio of clubmates, including front row colleagues Mako Vunipola and Matt Stevens, in just one of a number of subplots for what should be a hugely entertaining fixture.
“It’s always special playing against the British & Irish Lions and it’s something that I’m certainly looking forward to,” Brits told the Saracens website.
“The year I joined Sarries in 2009 was the year that The Lions toured South Africa so hopefully now I’ll have that chance to play against them.
“And maybe playing against Mako and Matty, that would be special. Hopefully they’ll give me an easy ride but, let’s be honest, I don’t think that will happen!”
Brits was a try scorer for the Baa-Baas against England on Saturday and he’s enjoyed every minute of the experience so far, despite defeat at Twickenham.
“It’s already been a great week – spending time with some guys that we play week in and week out has been brilliant. We have a talented squad together and it’s been fun,” added Brits, who can see similarities between the Barbarians and The Lions.
“One good thing I have noticed is that the Barbarians are somewhat unique and, with it being invitation only to make the squad, it makes it a huge privilege to play for the Baa-Baas.”
