Shane Williams extended his winning record over Scotland to eight games as he scored two tries to see Wales home 24-6 at Murrayfield.
The double British & Irish Lions wing scored a try in each half to end Wales’ run of eight games without a win, their second worst series of results in their history, and take his Test try tally to 55.
His record against the Scots is remarkable. Last season he scored the match winning try in the third minute of injury time at the Millennium Stadium and now has nine tries in eight outings against the men in blue.
Williams has already revealed this will be his final year of international rugby and is closing in on David Campese’s 64 try tally at the top of the world try scoring lists. He is also now within two tries of former Scotland and Lions wing Ian Smith’s 78 year record of 24 Championship tries.
Brian O’Driscoll moved to 23 tries with his match winner in Rome last weekend and will be in action against France in Round 2. But Williams is now definitely in the hunt to overtake Smith with three games left to play.
As well as Williams’ two tries, fellow 2009 Lions tourist James Hook picked up 14 points. Back at No 10 in place of Stephen Jones, Hook made the break to set-up Williams’ first try and went through the 250 Test points barrier as he steered Wales to a much needed victory.
Scotland failed to score a try after racking up three in their opening round defeat against France in Paris. Victory for Wales moved them into third place in the RBS 6 Nations table ahead of the Ireland v France game in Dublin.
