The Lions’ next opponents are packed with the world’s best talents says a former Australia star.
Australia host the Lions in 2013, 12 years after Toutai Kefu helped the Wallabies to a 2-1 series win over Britain and Ireland’s elite.
And while the class of 2001 featured legendary figures such as John Eales, George Gregan and Stephen Larkham, Kefu is convinced the current crop of Wallabies have even more world-class talent within their ranks.
"They have a core group of players who I reckon could be challenging for the best in their position in the world," Kefu, who played in all three Tests against the Lions last time out, told AAP.
"The halfback and five-eighth (Will Genia and Quade Cooper) particularly, and I think if you have three or four of those in your team you're a very good side.
"They have some wonderful athletes and they're interchangeable as well; you can't just say (James) O'Connor's a good winger or (Kurtly) Beale's a good fullback – they're out and out great players."
And while it is Genia and Cooper who have generated the greatest headlines in recent months, Kefu believes it is O’Connor who is the country’s crown jewel.
The versatile youngster has produced some sensational displays since scoring a hat-trick of tries on his international debut back in 2008.
With experience far beyond his years, the former Western Force and now Melbourne Rebels flyer should just keep on getting better – a worrying assessment as far as the Lions are concerned.
"I think James O'Connor is the best footballer in Australia at the moment and he's only 21," added Kefu.
"He can do everything: kick, tackle, run and he's quick. He's absolutely got no fear.
"I just think he's a wonderful athlete."
