It wasn’t a problem that Ian McGeechan’s British & Irish Lions side suffered from, as he was able to field the heaviest pack of all-time in South Africa, but a lack of bulk has been identified as one of the biggest worries for Indian rugby players.
India host the 2010 Commonwealth Games and their South Africa sevens coach, Norman Laker, is concerned about the size of his players ahead of potential clashes with players from England, Scotland, Wales, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Canada and Kenya.
And the solution? Simple, eat seven meals and at least 15 eggs per day
“I’ve told the players they must eat at least 15 eggs a day, six for breakfast and the remaining nine any time, any how, during the day,” the country’s South African coach Norman Laker told the Telegraph newspaper on Friday.
“The players have three meals a day and that’s not enough. In South Africa, elite rugby players have seven meals a day.”
“Indian players weigh on average 72-77 kg, whereas the international players weigh between 88 and 100 kg. That is the weight difference you have to make up.”
Laker is taking his players to South Africa for a training stint. The Springboks are the No 1 ranked team in the world game at present, with India languishing at 83rd out of 95 on the IRB rankings.
