Scotland and British & Irish Lions hooker Frank Laidlaw has passed away at the age of 84.

Hailing from Hawick, Laidlaw won 32 caps for Scotland over the course of a seven-year international career from 1965 and 1971.

And during that time, he was selected to tour with The British & Irish Lions in both 1966 and 1971. Laidlaw played in two Tests on the 1966 Tour of Australia and New Zealand, playing twice against the All Blacks.

Having taken over the Scotland captaincy from fellow Melrose player and Lions great Jim Telfer in 1970, Laidlaw was again selected for the 1971 Tour of New Zealand.

He played 28 matches for the Lions in all, over the course of his two Tours.

That was Laidlaw’s final year of international rugby, and he was involved in the RFU’s Centenary Match at Twickenham, playing for a combined Scotland and Ireland team.

After hanging up his boots, Laidlaw stayed involved in the game including spending nine years on the committee at Melrose, as well as coaching the Under-18s and senior XV.

The British & Irish Lions send sincere condolences to all of Frank Laidlaw’s family and friends.
