Doug Smith won eight Scotland caps in his international career, in addition to a solitary Lions cap against the Wallabies in 1950 on their Tour to Australia and New Zealand.
The winger was a talented sportsman, having played football and cricket, before settling on rugby in the 1940s.
He made his Scotland debut against France in 1949 and scored one try in eight games. His 1950 Tour was cut short from a playing perspective because of a broken arm but remained in New Zealand for the rest of the Tour.
He is most famous for managing the 1971 Lions side which won in New Zealand – their first against the All Blacks in almost 75 years. On that Tour he predicted before the Test series that the Lions would emerge victorious 2-1.
After three Tests, the Lions led 2-1, and a JPR Williams drop-goal helped set up a draw in the final Test as Smith's prediction came true.
Smith was awarded an OBE in 1972 and acted as president of the SRU between 1986-1987.
