Alan "Neddy" Ashcroft burst onto the international scene in 1956 when he made his England debut against Wales.
The back row was ever-present for four seasons and helped the Red Rose win the 1957 Grand Slam.
His form earned him a spot on the 1959 British & Irish Lions Tour to Australia and New Zealand, where he started two of the six Test matches.
He played 18 games in all on the Tour, scoring two tries in the clash against Bay of Plenty/Thames Valley.
