Arthur McClinton played largely played second fiddle to George Isherwood on the British & Irish Lions Tour to South Africa in 1910.
But unlike Isherwood, Irishman McClinton won two Test caps for his country – turning out for Ireland in the 1910 Five Nations Championship.
McClinton played for the old North of Ireland FC – the third oldest club in Ireland – and won the 1908 Ulster Senior Cup.
Despite Isherwood’s monopoly of the Lions Test shirt in South Africa, McClinton shone in the midweek side, making eight appearances and – in the days when they were still worth four points – knocking over two drop goals against Orange River County and Southern Rhodesia.
