A rarity in English rugby, Ernest Hammett was born in Radstock, represented his country, but played for a Welsh club side – Newport.
Hammett racked up 24 tries, 39 conversions, five penalties and seven drop-goals in a distinguished club career with the Welsh side.
The prolific centre played eight Tests for England between 1920 and 1922, winning six of those and losing only his first and last internationals, both of which were against Wales.
Hammett then toured with the Lions five years after his last English international, travelling with the Lions to Argentina in 1927.
He started the first three internationals and his pin-point kicking was a crucial factor in the Lions success against Los Pumas.
