Doug Prentice is one of those privileged enough to have both captained and managed a Lions Tour.
In 1930, in the absence of his England skipper Wavell Wakefield, Prentice led the trip to New Zealand and Australia - after being informed he had been selected for the role in the hotel the night before their departure.
The No 8, who was capped three times by England, kicked five conversions and two penalties in his opening match against Manawhenua and went on to record 50 points in total, including a solitary try against a side consisting of players from Ashburton, South Canterbury and North Otago.
He also played in the 13-10 defeat to New Zealand and his conversion couldn’t stop the 6-5 loss to Australia eight weeks later.
Prentice, who would go on to become secretary of the RFU, then led the 23-man Tour to Argentina in 1936 as his side won all ten matches by an aggregate of 399 points to 12.
The matches were effectively exhibition contests and the visitors conceded only one try throughout the trip.
