Herbert Brooks started playing rugby at the age of 16 in Darlington, and just a year later made his debut for Durham County against Northumberland.

The talented full-back went to Edinburgh University for medical studies, where he was elected captain in 1882-83 and played six times against Glasgow.

He later became captain of Durham County and his form caught the eye of Lions coaches Arthur Shrewsbury and Alfred Shaw.

He played 17 times on the 1888 Lions Tour on the wing or at centre, scoring three tries, while he also refereed several matches.
