John Hayes overcame his late start to the sport – he didn’t play the game until after his 18th birthday – by picking up a brace of Lions Tours in 2005 and 2009.
The Irish international was 31 years old when he boarded the plane for New Zealand where he played four provincial matches and won a Lions Test cap against Argentina in the pre-Tour clash in Cardiff.
An injury to Scotland prop Euan Murray during the 2009 Tour to South Africa led to Hayes boarding a plane as a late injury replacement and his services were required in the third and final Test.
The Irishman came on for Phil Vickery in the record-equalling 28-9 win over the Springboks.
Over the course of the two Tours the former Munster prop made a total of seven appearances.
