John Sharland was a forward who went on the 1904 British Lions tour to Australia and New Zealand.
He played in seven games in total, winning six of them, the only blot on his copy book coming as the Lions could only draw 18-18 against a combined Taranaki/Ranganui/Manawatu outfit.
After sitting out the Lions’ opening victory over New South Wales, Sharland was involved as a Combined Western District side were brushed aside 21-6, featuring seven days later as Metropolitan Union were downed 19-6.
He went on to feature in victories over Northern Districts and Toowoomba before playing in the Lions’ final game of the tour, a 5-0 win over New South Wales in Sydney.
Sharland never broke into the Test side but in total the Lions won 16 of 19 matches on tour, including three Test victories over Australia, although they suffered a 9-3 reverse in their sole clash with New Zealand.
