Paul Wallace made six appearances during the successful 1997 tour of South Africa, appearing in all three Test matches.

The Ireland prop was one of only five members of the tour who played the full duration of all three tests - and was described by captain Martin Johnson as the ‘player of the series’.

Tour manager Fran Cotton claimed he was the ‘cornerstone of the Lions scrum’ as he formed an unlikely front-row alliance with Tom Smith and Keith Wood - instead of the more fancied Jason Leonard and Dai Young.

Wallace made 45 appearances for Ireland and played his club rugby for Saracens and Leinster.
