Bill Howard earned his taste of Lions action on the 1938 Tour of South Africa – the 14th Tour by a British Isles team and the sixth to South Africa.
Howard made ten appearances throughout the Tour and scored his only try in the 42-3 triumph over North-East Districts in Burgersdorp.
The No 8 featured in the first Test against the Springboks at Ellis Park – a 26-12 defeat – which would prove to be the only Test cap of his career.
The Old Birkonians star died in his hometown of Birkenhead aged 70 in February 1979.
