William ‘Bill’ Mulcahy and UCD team-mate Niall Brophy were the first in an illustrious line of University College Dublin players to star for the British & Irish Lions including Fergus Slattery, Brian O’Driscoll and Sean O’Brien.
Mulcahy played 32 games for the Lions, the lock started all four Tests in 1962 as well as winning two Tests in 1959 – against New Zealand in Auckland and Australia in Brisbane.
He made his debut in Ireland’s historic 1958 9-6 Test win over Australia at Lansdowne Road and would later go on to partner the great Willie-John McBride in the engine room for both Ireland and the Lions.
